England vs Sri Lanka Live Cricket Score: ICC Champions Trophy 2013 Group A match

David Warner, the maverick Australian batsman, faces banishment from the Ashes squad after punching Joe Root, the rising star of English cricket. The incident in a late-night bar is merely the latest to affect Australia who look increasingly beleaguered with less than a month to go before the start of the Ashes.

It was made clear by the England and Wales Board that Warner had "initiated an unprovoked physical attack on a member of the England team". Although it did not name Root, it quickly became apparent that he was the player approached by Warner in the Walkabout bar in Birmingham early last Sunday morning, hours after England had inflicted a heavy defeat on Australia in the Champions Trophy.
Warner was looking increasingly isolated last night. Given the Australians' previous hard line with miscreants it is difficult to believe that they will not throw the book at a player who only three weeks ago was fined for a breach of the code of behaviour for a series of tweets against a journalist, which were marked by the use of expletives.
Three months ago they dropped four players from a Test match for failing to observe a management request to fill in a form on how they might improve their performances. Throwing a punch in the small hours at a fellow cricketer who is to be your opponent throughout a long year of cricket might be deemed slightly more serious.
Warner was omitted from his team's Champions Trophy match against New Zealand at Edgbaston, two miles from where the incident happened. The game was abandoned after rain halted New Zealand's innings at 51 for 2 in reply to Australia's 243 for 8.
Cricket Australia said he was being stood down after being reported for breaching Article 6 of their code of behaviour, being allegedly involved in a physical altercation. The hearing will be convened as soon as possible.
George Bailey, Australia's stand-in captain, said: "I enjoy playing with [Warner], I love his enthusiasm, his energy and the way he plays. I wish I had his talent." Bailey added he did not think Warner had a short fuse or had crossed the line. In an unfortunate expression he added that Warner had taken the omission "on the chin".
England made it clear that neither Root nor the two players who were with him in the bar, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes, faced censure. They were happy after interviewing the players separately and being happy that their reports of what happened matched.
Alastair Cook, England's captain, said: "We're disappointed that it happened but after investigating, we don't believe we've done anything wrong. It's a shame that it has marred what was a very good win for us. But it's time to move on, especially for us, as we've got a very important game to play."
That is against Sri Lanka today and a win will guarantee qualification for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. Cook said Root seemed fine, had suffered no physical injury and had practised normally.
The players from the two sides arrived independently at the bar, which is a fairly basic Australian drinking den. Root was wearing a party wig of the type that is in abundance in the establishment. Whether Warner took exception to this may come out in the hearing but he was reported to have approached Root and thrown a punch which landed a glancing blow. At that point, Broad put his arm round Root's shoulders and said it was time to go to bed. Clint McKay, the Australian fast bowler, persuaded Warner to leave. On Sunday morning, it was suggested Root received a call from Warner apologising.
Cook said he had no problems with the players being out so late in the middle of an international tournament. He said: "Yeah, it's not often you get to win international games, and when the schedule allows, as long as it's within certain parameters, which we set as a team. We didn't have training for a couple of days. Clearly, if it's back-to-back games it's different. It's important to let your hair down because to celebrate wins also builds team spirit."

Cesc Fabregas labels speculation linking him with Manchester United and Arsenal as 'absurd'

Cesc Fabregas has again played down speculation linking him with a move away from Barcelna, saying talk he want to leave the Nou Camp is 'absurd'.

The Spain international has at times struggled to force his way into the starting XI at the Nou Camp and was understood to have grown frustrated by the situation.
That led to speculation he could leave the club, two years after returning there from Arsenal.
With new Manchester United manager David Moyes seeking a new central midfielder and the Gunners ready to spend heavily in the transfer market this summer, he was linked with a return to the Premier League.
However, after stating earlier this week he wants to fight for his place at the Nou Camp, he has now spoken of his bemusement as to the source of the stories about his future.
"I've always said that I'm happy at Barca. Whoever says that I'm leaving doesn't know me and has never spoken with me," he said.
"Nor with my agent, because he knows that I don't want him to talk with other people about me. I'm very private and I don't even talk about these things with my family.
"If someone says anything that isn't that I want to play at Barca, it's completely absurd."

Sri Lanka bowl, Swann and Kulasekara return

Sri Lanka won the toss and chosen to bowl first in the day-night Champions Trophy Group A match against England at The Oval. The England captain, Alastair Cook, admitted that, in overcast conditions, he would have chosen to bowl first, too.
Both sides made one change to the XIs that played in their opening games. England have brought back Graeme Swann, who missed the game against Australia due to a back injury, for James Tredwell and Sri Lanka have brought in Nuwan Kulasekara for Thisara Perera.
Sri Lanka, who lost their opening game against New Zealand, need to win to sustain their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals while England, who won their opening game against Australia, would be guaranteed a semi-final place if they win.
England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson
Sri Lanka 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Lahiru Thirimanne, 8 Rangana Herath 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Shaminda Eranga, 11 Lasith Malinga

South Africa v West Indies

After a straightforward loss against India in their opening match of the tournament, South Africa did well to bounce back and beat Pakistan by a huge margin of 67 runs just last week. The mainstay of the team is their exceptional batting. Right from the openers till number seven in their unit, all batsmen have been in a brilliant form and if they win the toss, one can expect a barrage of runs. Hashim Amla has been destructive hitting a solid 81 that helped him earn the Man of the match award in the previous match. The other batsmen Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, David Miller, Ryan McLaren all have been in decent form contributing useful runs to the total. Although there have been middle-order collapses that have pegged back their batting at times, one cannot deny that South Africa commands one of the best batting units in the tournament and they would be expected to put up a fighting total when they take on West Indies.

Having no Dale Steyn or Morne Morkel in the side, on paper, makes the Proteas look weak. However, a spectacular bowling performance convincingly led by Ryan McLaren helped South Africa in achieving a huge victory over Pakistan, bowling them out for a mere 167 runs. McLaren was assisted by new-comer Chris Morris who was responsible for sending Pakistan's two most dangerous batsmen home and Tsotsobe who was just as economical and wonderful. Other part-time bowlers have done well to curb the flow of runs putting pressure on opposition batsmen when needed. And with Dale Steyn set to return back for their final league game, it would be a tough task for the West Indies batsmen to overcome the Protean bowling attack.

Their only cause of concern is the fielding which cost them extra runs and they need to take special care of that. Also, they would need to take a look at their dismal running between the wickets which resulted in four run-outs in the previous match.

Probable XI: Hashim Amla, Colin Ingram, Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers (c, wk), JP Duminy, David Miller, Ryan McLaren, Aaron Phangiso/Robin Peterson, Chris Morris, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe

West Indies

After barely registering a win against Pakistan in their first match, West Indies were humiliated by India in their last match when their batsmen failed to put up a respectable total and their bowlers faltered against a formidable Indian batting attack. Their batting has been a cause of concern in both the games, with only Johnson Charles and Darren Sammy playing to their strength in the previous game. While Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard have managed to make some 20-30 runs in both the games, they have failed to convert those starts into substantial innings. Other middle order batsmen like Dwayne Bravo, Marlon Samuels and Ramnaresh Sarwan have been equally disappointing.

The way Indians mercilessly thrashed West Indies bowling was enough to doubt their capability especially after putting up a noteworthy performance to bowl out Pakistan for 170 in their first game. Whereas all the bowlers had chipped in to to make it difficult for the struggling Pakistani batsmen to pile any decent runs, only Sunil Narine was able to make any impact on the Indians in the second game. The heroes of the first match failed to contain the Indian batsmen and even after using as many as 8 bowlers, West Indies lost the match by 8 wickets. If Windies want to have any shot at winning this match, they will have to out-bowl their counterparts as the South African batting packs in a lot of fire-power to destroy even the best of bowling attacks.

Probable XI: Johnson Charles (wk), Chris Gayle, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy, Sunil Narine, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach

Sri Lanka ask England to bat

The decider - as it is being called, South Africa and West Indies will battle it out in the 9th match of the Champions cup to secure a place in the semi-finals. It will be a do-or-die situation as both teams have an equal chance to upset the other and move forward. A loss here could mean end of the road for that team in the final Champions Trophy cup. Having said that, Cardiff looms with the threat of 80% chances of rains and the weather may put a damper on what might otherwise be an exciting match. And in case the match rains out, South Africa will get through on the basis of a better net run-rate.

South Africa

Sri Lanka seek revival in make-or-break game

Sri Lanka will look for a vastly improved batting performance against hosts England on Thursday as they try to stay afloat in the Champions Trophy.

Angelo Mathews' team were shot out for 138 against New Zealand in Cardiff on Sunday, and only a hostile four-wicket spell from sling-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga helped them save face in the narrow one-wicket defeat.

Sri Lanka, World Cup finalists in 2007 and 2011, must now defeat both England and Australia in day-night matches at the Oval to keep their semi-final hopes alive from group A.

"I think the whole batting unit has to take responsibility," Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews said on Wednesday. "We can't really expect the bowlers to do the job for us everytime."

Mathews said the morale was high despite the opening setback and added he expected his team to come back strongly in the next two matches.

"Defending 138, the guys responded to that brilliantly," he said. "The equation is simple. We have got two games and we have to win both to stay alive in the tournament.

"We have to stay positive and take England on. We should not put too much pressure on ourselves. We have to go out there, enjoy the game and do the best we can. The result will take care of itself."

Mathews said England had one of the best seam attacks in the game and admitted the first task for his team was to play out the full 50 overs.

Sri Lanka lasted just 37.5 overs against New Zealand, mainly due to Kumar Sangakkara's defiant 68 as seven batsmen failed to reach double figures on a slow Cardiff pitch.

England, meanwhile, bounced back from a 2-1 one-day series loss against New Zealand ahead of the tournament to brush aside old foes Australia by 48 runs in their first match.

Alastair Cook's home team go into the match with their preparations overshadowed by an incident at a bar in Birmingham between Australia's David Warner and young England player Joe Root over the weekend.

Australia stood down Warner for Wednesday's match against New Zealand for what the England and Wales Cricket Board said was an "unprovoked physical attack on a member of the England team."

Cook, who confirmed that the England player involved was 22-year-old Root, insisted the team wanted to get over the incident to concentrate on what was an important game for the hosts.

"We are clearly disappointed that the incident happened, but after investigating it from our side, we don't believe we have done anything wrong," said Cook.

"Joe just wants to get the matter buried and play cricket. He's an excellent young man. It's unfortunate this has happened, but he wants to put it behind him."

Cook said Malinga would be the danger man for his side, mainly because of his unusual bowling action.

"Malinga is a mighty fine bowler," the England captain said. "He has got a very different technique and bowling action. Some of the lads have faced him before.

Rain ruins keen contest

Rain played spoilsport and led to the abandonment of an intriguing clash between Australia and New Zealand. Chasing Australia's 243/8, New Zealand had moved to 51/2 after 15 overs when rain stopped play. There was no further play possible and the match was called off.

Any clash between Australia and New Zealand invokes passion and when you add context to it, it's like adding the icing on the cake. The Trans-Tasmanian rivalry shifted to Birmingham with Australia desperate for a win, for a loss would in all probability end their chances of making the semi-finals. New Zealand on the other hand were seeking a win to consolidate their chances of making it to the knock-out stage.

David Warner was stood down from the match after being reportedly involved in a pub brawl with England's Joe Root. With skipper, Michael Clarke still unavailable due to a back injury, the Australian batting line-up seemed a wee bit feeble.

Stand-in skipper, George Bailey won the toss and elected to bat. The Indian T20 League's newest 'million dollar baby', Glenn Maxwell replaced Warner, and Mitchell Starc gave way for Xavier Doherty. New Zealand retained their winning eleven.

New Zealand got the big fish, Shane Watson, early in the innings with Mitchell McClenaghan getting rid of the all-rounder in the 2nd over. A brilliant piece of fielding from Martin Guptill saw the back of Phillip Hughes a couple of overs later. Australia had limped to 32/2 after the mandatory powerplay. Kyle Mills and McClenaghan had bowled a good line and length and kept a tight leash on the batsmen.

George Bailey broke the shackles getting three boundaries within the space of six deliveries. He put together a steady 64 run partnership with Mathew Wade before the latter was trapped lbw off the bowling of Nathan McCullum in the 19th over of the innings - the decision of the on-field umpire upheld by the DRS.

Nathan McCullum and Daniel Vettori bowled in tandem from the 14th to the 23rd overs and gave away just 30 runs in the 10-over period. Bailey found an able partner in Adam Voges and the pair built a solid stand without taking any risks. Voges broke free by easing Southee for two consecutive straight drives in the 28th over before hitting McClenaghan for two in the next. Meanwhile Bailey had registered his second consecutive half-century. Voges followed suit and the pair had put on 77 before the Australian captain was cleaned up by McCullum for 55. Only 25 runs were scored in the batting powerplay.

Mitchell March and Adam Voges put a foot on the accelerator before they were sent packing in successive overs from McClenaghan for 22 and 71 respectively. Glenn Maxwell hit a few lusty blows to lift Australia to a competitive 243/8. McClenaghan was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers and snaffled four wickets.

Clint Mckay gave Australia the early breakthrough by getting Martin Guptill caught at backward point for eight in the 4th over - the ball stopping on the batsman, courtesy the slowness of the wicket. The Australian seamer also had Luke Ronchi caught by Shane Watson stationed at a position somewhere between fourth slip and gully. At this stage, New Zealand were reduced to 26/2 in the 8th.

The Australian seamers kept things tight and built pressure on the incumbent New Zealand batsmen - Kane Wiiliamson and Ross Taylor. New Zealand had moved to 51/2 after 15 overs when rain stopped play. There was no further play possible and the match was called off. Both the teams split a point each. New Zealand now take on England on Sunday (June 16) at Cardiff while Australia will clash with Sri Lanka in London on Monday.
