KARACHI: The eagerly-awaited Pakistan versus India fixture of the ICC Champions Trophy at Edgbaston on June 15 will be purely officiated by English quartet of umpires Ian Gould, Kettleborough and Nigel Llong with Chris Broad as the match referee.
According to the list released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday, former England wicket-keeper Gould and Kettleborough will be the on-field umpires with Llong monitoring the TV replays for the Group ‘B’ clash between Misbah-ul-Haq’s charges and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side.
Ex-Sri Lankan off-spinner and 1996 World Cup winner Kumar Dharmasena has been named as the fourth (reserve) umpire, while former England opening batsman Broad, father of current Test paceman Stuart Broad, will oversee the proceedings.
Llong along with Steve Davis, the Australian at the centre of several contentious decisions during Pakistan’s 3-0 Test whitewash in South Africa last February, have been nominated to officiate in Pakistan’s group match against the West Indies at The Oval on June 7 with Tony Hill of New Zealand acting as the TV umpire, Broad as the match referee and Kettleborough the fourth umpire.
Pakistan’s other pool game against South Africa would be supervised by on-field umpires Kettleborough and New Zealand’s Billy Bowden with Dharmasena taking charge of TV replays and Llong acting as the fourth umpire. Former Indian paceman Javagal Srinath has been named as the match referee for the June 10 tie at Edgbaston.
In the high-profile Group ‘A’ clash involving Ashes rivals England and Australia, at Edgbaston on June 8, the match officials are Dharmasena and South Africa’s Marais Erasmus (on-field umpires), Bowden (TV replays), Pakistan’s Aleem Dar (fourth umpire) and Srinath (match referee).
The ICC’s announcement is confined to match of the group stage as well as the warm-up stage of the event which runs from June 6 to 23. The postings of the semi-finals and final will be made at the conclusion of the league phase on June 17.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s two-warm games will be against Sri Lanka (at Edgbaston on May 30) and South Africa (at The Oval on June 3) will be supervised by umpires on ICC elite and international panels as well as local English officials.
Apart from Broad and Srinath, the ICC has named as ex-Zimbabwe batsman Andy Pycroft on the panel of match referees for the Champions Trophy.
The umpires who would be officiating are Billy Bowden (New Zealand), Aleem Dar (Pakistan), Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka), Steve Davis (Australia), Marais Erasmus (South Africa), Ian Gould (England), Tony Hill (New Zealand), Richard Kettleborough (England), Nigel Llong (England), Bruce Oxenford (Australia), Asad Rauf (Pakistan) and Rod Tucker (Australia).
