‘Every Champions Trophy match will be huge’

Dubai At a time when England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to become the hub of many international events, Colin Gibson has taken over as their Director of Communication. Armed with the experience and exposure he gained as Head of Media and Communications of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in Dubai, Gibson feels he is ready to take up the fresh challenge starting with the oncoming Champions Trophy.
In an exclusive interview with Gulf News at his new office at the ECB, located at the historic Lord’s cricket ground in London, he said: “Every match in the Champions Trophy will be a big game when top eight teams are playing in it. Every team that comes to England will have crowd support whether you are from Zimbabwe, India Pakistan or New Zealand. There is a population out there ready to support you. This a very multi-cultural country and so when India meet Pakistan at Edgbaston, the atmosphere will be same as in Lahore or New Delhi . There will be the same intensity and atmosphere,” said Gibson, who while with ICC has witnessed some of the finest contests in world cricket.
Talking about the high profile India-Pakistan contest in the Champions Trophy, Colin said: “It will be interesting to see how Pakistan performs in this tournament. Pakistan has always done well in global events. Look at their record and it is amazing. In their group are South Africa, India and West Indies. The other group has England, Australia Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Do not forget that New Zealand has made it to six semifinals in world events. It is a great record and so every match will be a huge game here.”
After Champions Trophy, England Cricket Board will continue to be busy hogging the attention of world cricket. “We have the World Test Championship, the Womens World Cup and the World Cup in 2019. It is going to be a very busy nine years ahead for the country,” said Gibson.
