IPL spot-fixing: ICC pulls out Asad Rauf from Champions Trophy

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that it has withdrawn elite panel umpire Asad Rauf from the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 that will be staged in England and Wales from 6-23 June.

The decision has been made after reports on Wednesday indicated that the umpire was under investigation by Mumbai Police in connection with the IPL spot-fixing scandal.

Explaining the decision, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: “In the wake of reports that the Mumbai Police are conducting an investigation into Asad Rauf’s activities, we feel that it is in Asad’s best interests as well as those of the sport and the event itself, that he is withdrawn from participating in the ICC Champions Trophy.”

Vindoo has revealed to his interrogators that a Pakistani umpire in IPL is involved. Bookie Pawan Jaipur bought an expensive gift for the umpire. Vindoo sent it by cargo to Delhi. Another bookie Prem Taneja’s brother went to collect the packet from cargo at Delhi airport.

Reacting to the development, PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf said, “Rauf's name appeared in a "gray area" during last year's IPL, BCCI should not have allowed him this year.”

In August 2012, Rauf was accused by a Mumbai-based model of sexually exploiting her on the pretext of marrying her. He had admitted that photographs of the two posing together were real, but denied having any relationship with her.
As per the duty schedule of the on-field umpires, Rauf was supposed to officiate in a warm-up match between Australia and West Indies in Cardiff on June 1.

In the tournament group league stage, he was supposed to officiate in two matches in Cardiff. The first on June 9 was between Sri Lanka and New Zealand while other was between West Indies and South Africa.
