World's top eight teams are set to battle it out for One-Day International (ODI) cricket's second-most prestigious trophy in the 2013 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy. The event is set to start on June 6 inEngland.
The teams will be divided in two groups. While Australia, Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand are set to take on each other in Group A, India, South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan are placed in Group B. Top two teams of both the groups will make it to the semi-finals of the tournament.
To be played by the top eight nations in the ICC ODI Rankings, the Champions Trophy is the biggest international cricket extravaganza after the World Cup.
The tournament will be played across 18 days in three venues — The Oval, Edgbaston and Cardiff — in England with the final to be played at Edgbaston.
England is set to become the first country to host the Champions Trophy twice. They were the hosts in 2004 when an inspired West Indian side won the tournament.
The tournament has so far been played in Bangladesh (1998), Kenya (2000), Sri Lanka (2002), England (2004), India (2006) and South Africa (2009).
India will take on South Africa in the opening encounter of the tournament at Cardiff. Both the teams have won the tournament previously and are among the favourites to win it again in 2013.
Defending champions Australia are the only country to win the tournament twice. The current side may not be as strong as the one’s who have competed in the tournament previously, yet the Michael Clarke-led side is one to watch out for.
